Our Why:
Action From Within
As urban residents, taking part of food production and waste cycling at our home is one powerful way to connect with the natural world. With a little effort we can harness the benefits of compost to create healthy food and abundant communities.
However, with all of the different methods and details, composting can seem confusing or overwhelming. The purpose of Urban Anchors is to provide support to residents who wish to be more involved with their food story. We seek to empower our neighbors with the confidence to be successful with growing and composting food.
Accessibility to anyone who seeks support is fundamental. This is why we meet residents where they are at financially and provide alternatives to composting on-site. We seek to activate “Anchors” throughout our greater community who wish to serve as hosts for decentralized compost hubs. Anchoring valuable resources in our neighborhoods.
During the pandemic we observed more of our neighbors looking to grow food at home. The fluctuations from the supply chain became less impactful and they could control the quality and taste of our foods.
About our Founder
In 2008, as part of a graduate fellowship, Bennett Rock witnessed high school aged students transform themselves in one semester while immersed in a 1,200 acre wilderness campus. He recognized the feeling that created this formative change in the students exists in us all through sincere relationships with the natural world. Following his graduate program in Residential Environmental Education he dedicated his life to service of creating these relationships in others.
